Applications open for 2027 Meat Industry Association scholarships

Students considering a future in the red meat sector have until 26 November to submit applications for the Meat Industry Association (MIA) scholarships.
The MIA offers annual scholarships of $5,000 for undergraduates and $10,000 for post graduate students.
Applications for the 2027 academic year are welcome from tertiary students studying subjects relevant to the red meat processing industry, with the goal of developing a career in the sector.
MIA chief executive Nick Beeby said the scholarship programme opens doors to a wide range of careers in a sector with an exciting future.
“It’s an exciting time to build a career in red meat. We export to more than 100 markets, and strong demand for our products gives us confidence in the future. The sector supports one in 20 jobs in New Zealand, offering opportunities in cities and regional communities across the country.
“Every day I hear great stories about people’s experiences in the sector and the opportunities available to them. There are many different career pathways, so a wide range of academic subjects can provide a starting point.
“Our 2026 scholars are studying commerce, nutrition and food science, environmental science, law, agribusiness, food marketing and supply chain management, with a postgraduate scholar researching refrigeration engineering.
“We are looking for highly motivated young people studying subjects that will support a future career in the industry. Attracting skilled people and future leaders is essential to growing this important part of New Zealand’s economy, and our scholarships provide a pathway for talented young people to build their future in the sector.”
Applicants must be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident studying at a tertiary institution in a discipline relevant to the meat processing industry and planning a career in the red meat sector, beyond the farm gate.
