New Zealand red meat exporters acknowledge the Government’s methane science and target review findings

New Zealand’s red meat processing and exporting sector acknowledges the findings of the Government’s independent review on New Zealand’s biogenic methane science and targets.

The report’s findings show the importance of collective action, something that Meat Industry Association (MIA) Chief Executive Sirma Karapeeva agrees is key to meeting the Paris goals to restrict warming to 1.5 degrees.

“New Zealand’s red meat products are already some of the most climate efficient in the world thanks to our pasture-based farming systems, and the report’s findings reflect this.

“The sector is listening to the market signals and we call for a pragmatic policy that takes into account what has already been achieved and demonstrates to our offshore customers we take our responsibility to reduce emissions seriously.

“This is why the sector is making significant investment, alongside government and other industries, to develop tools and technologies that will support the reduction of emissions across the supply chain.

“Providing stable and sustainable pathways for adoption of technology will be the key to success, alongside sensible and achievable targets that are backed up by evidence and do not unnecessarily impede food production.

“Practical policy and regulatory frameworks are essential to drive productivity growth, encourage innovation, and produce sustainable, premium, world-class food.”
